UPDATE: Tornado Touches Down Near Roby as Severe Weather Forecast for West Texas

SAN ANGELO, TX -- A tornado touched down near the Fisher County town of Roby on Monday as the same developing storm system is expected to dump three to five inches of rain across the Concho Valley Tuesday night and Wednesday.  

KTXS is reporting the twister touched down about 7:20 p.m. Monday evening.  No damage has been reported. 

The National Weather Service office in San Angelo issued a special weather statement early Tuesday morning and a severe thunderstorm watch until 11 p.m. for San Angelo and the Concho Valley.  Severe thunderstorms are possible Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning.  The main hazards will be large hail and damaging winds, along with an isolated tornado or two, deadly lightning, and heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding.

According to the NWS, an approaching upper level storm system will combine with a slow moving cold front moving south across the area to bring the potential for heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms to West Central Texas from this afternoon through Wednesday. 

Much of West Central Texas will see one to three inches of rain through mid week mainly from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday afternoon.

Some areas will see even more and isolated totals in excess of five inches will be possible mainly south of Interstate 20.

Should this heavier rain fall over city areas such as Abilene, San Angelo, Brownwood, Sweetwater, and Brady, flooding of city streets, low water crossings, and other low lying areas near small creeks and streams will be possible.

Strong to severe storms will also be possible. The best chance for severe thunderstorms will be south of Interstate 20 from late this afternoon through the evening hours.

The primary concerns with these storms will be large hail and damaging winds. However, an isolated tornado can not be ruled out.

There is a 100 percent chance of severe thunderstorms and heavy rain tonight and a 90 percent chance on Wednesday.
