SAN ANGELO, TX -- Two teams representing Angelo State University’s Bass Anglers Club have qualified to compete at the 2020 Yeti FLW College Fishing National Championship next summer at a location to be announced.
The two ASU teams made it into the national tournament field by placing in the top 10 at the Yeti FLW College Fishing Southern Conference Tournament on Lake Texoma just north of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex earlier this month.
ASU team members Steven Armstrong of Brownwood and Lance Culak of Fredericksburg finished sixth out of more than 100 two-person teams. Their total catch weight also fell just one ounce short of winning a top-five monetary prize. ASU’s Jon Garcia of San Angelo and Zachary Kuehler of Seymour finished in 13th place, but qualified for the national tournament because three teams that finished ahead of them had already qualified.
A third ASU team, Will Curlee of Round Rock and Hunter Owens of San Angelo, finished in 17th place.
The ASU Bass Anglers Club is a registered student organization. Any prize money won at tournaments goes back to the club and the university rather than to the individual winners. Paul Osmanski, assistant clinical professor of nursing, is the faculty sponsor. More details on ASU’s club sports teams are available at www.angelo.edu/club-sports.
Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) is the world’s largest tournament-fishing organization, providing anglers of all skill levels the opportunity to compete for millions of dollars in prize money across five tournament circuits. Headquartered in Benton, Ken., with offices in Minneapolis, FLW conducts more than 275 bass-fishing tournaments annually across the U.S. and sanctions tournaments in Canada, China, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, South Africa, South Korea and Spain.
