Cold Front Brings Near Critical Fire Weather Conditions

SAN ANGELO, TX — A strong cold front will bring near critical fire weather conditions to the Concho Valley Friday.

According to the National Weather Service office in San Angelo, elevated to near critical fire weather conditions will affect much of the area especially the Concho Valley. These conditions will be caused by wind speeds of 20 to 30 mph, low relative humidity values, and much warmer than normal temperatures.  The threat of wildfires will be elevated Friday night and Saturday.

Winds will pick up out of the southwest by late morning, then out of the west during the afternoon to between 20 and 30 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. A cold front will move through the area tonight, turning winds to the north at 15 to 25 knots tonight by midnight.

Forecasters say the cold front does not contain enough moisture for precipitation so the dry, windy conditions will create near critical fire weather conditions.

The forecast calls for temperatures to reach the mid 70s Friday afternoon with windy conditions then drop to the upper 30s overnight.  Saturday’s highs will be in the mid 50s with continued windy conditions.  Temperatures will approach freezing at 32 degrees Saturday night with breezy conditions.

The winds will subside by Sunday with afternoon temperatures reaching the lower 60s.
