OZONA, TX — Two truck tractors pulling trailers collided, killing one of the drivers about 20 miles northwest of Ozona on U.S. 190 late Tuesday night.
According to the Texas DPS, Flavio Zapata, 31, of Laredo, driving a 2000 International truck tractor with a semi-trailer, was traveling northwest on S.H. 137 approaching a stop sign at the S.H. 137 and U.S. 190 intersection. Zapata initiated a left turn to head west on U.S. 190 but DPS sad he disregarded the stop sign there.
Meanwhile, driving eastbound on U.S. 190 was Kyle Patrick Wartenbee, 37, of Gulfport, Miss., in a 2007 Peterbilt truck tractor pulling a semi-trailer. The speed limit along this stretch of highway is 75 mph, DPS stated.
The Wartenbee in his Peterbilt saw the International semi pulling out across his lane and attempted to maneuver his rig to avoid a collision. It was too late, however. The Peterbilt jackknifed and overturned while smashing into the International semi.
Both rigs caught on fire.
Wartenbee sustained only minor injuries, but Zapata was killed and pronounced dead at the scene by Crockett County Justice of the Peace Evelyn Kerbow.
DPS stated both drivers were wearing seatbelts. The weather was foggy and the roadways dry. The crash happened at 11:43 p.m. Jan. 15, 2019.
