Woman Killed Near Barnhart in Unlikely Series of Crashes

BARNHART, TX — A woman was killed in a series of crashes early Sunday morning, Jan. 13, 2019, in Irion County.

According to the Texas DPS, Vicky Lynn Hernandez, 45, of Rotan was in a minor crash at the intersection of RM 2469 and SH 163 early this morning. DPS said she was westbound on RM 2469 and ran the stop sign at the SH 163 intersection. After the crash, the truck she was driving was parked facing north along the fence line in the northwest corner of the intersection.

DPS said she was sitting on the tailgate of her crashed pickup when another vehicle approached the intersection headed westbound on RM 2469.

It was Conell Dwyon Pryor, 42, of Stamford, driving a 2015 Kia Optima. DPS said he ran the same stop sign, crossed SH 163, and departed the prepared surface. His Kia crashed into Hernandez seated on her tailgate and continued down the caliche road extension west of SH 163 before coming to a rest.

Irion County Justice of the Peace J.P. Smith pronounced Hernandez dead at the scene. Pryor was not injured.

DPS reported the roadway was dry and the skies clear. The crash happened at 6:30 a.m. Sunrise was at 7:41 a.m.
