AREA GIRLS HOOPS: Rocha, No. 1 Wall Dismantle Brady with Season-High Scoring

WALL, TX-- The no. 1-ranked Wall Lady Hawks extended their win streak to 11 games with an 84-20 thrashing of the Brady Lady Bulldogs Friday night.

Wall jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter before Brady answered with their first score of the game to pull within 7-2. From there, the teams went back and forth for a little bit before Wall took a stranglehold of the game and outscored Brady 20-6 in the first quarter behind eight points from senior forward Sam Rocha.

Rocha tallied another eight points and Brady's Journey Roddie had a three pointer as Wall extended their lead to 39-16 at the break.

Wall then put their patented defense to work and held Brady to just four points in the third while scoring 24 of their own behind five from Rocha and threes from Payton Box and Landry Reynolds. Those were the last points Brady scored.

Rocha then continued her hot streak with seven points, including a three pointer, in the fourth to help Wall post 21 points in the final frame.

The Angelo State signee finished with a game-high 28 points. She was one of three Lady Hawks in double figures. Fellow seniors Sawyer Lloyd and Jayden Fiebiger each finished with 12 points for Wall.

Kayde Raybion finished as Brady's high scorer with six points. Whitney Everett was right behind her with five.

Wall (18-1, 5-0) now holds sole possession of first place in District 4-3A with Ballinger not in district play on Friday. The two teams will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 8.

Brady (3-9, 1-3) hosts Reagan County on Jan. 8.

No. 3 Mason Picks Up 18th Straight Win in District Opener With No. 6 San Saba

The no. 3-ranked Mason Cowgirls had to come from behind and sweat out a late San Saba comeback in a thrilling 36-33 win to open play in District 27-2A. 

Mason led 8-5 after the first quarter before San Saba stormed back to take an 18-15 lead at the half.

Then, Ruby Mangus found another gear for seven points in the third quarter to lift Mason back on top 24-20 after holding the Lady Armadillos to just two points in the frame.

San Saba didn't go quietly, however. They outscored Mason 13-12 in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough.

Mangus had a game-high 16 points in the win. Right behind her was McKenzie Cano with 13.

Mason (25-1, 1-0) now sits on an 18-game win streak heading into their next district clash against Harper on Friday, Jan. 11.

Central Rolls Abilene to Stay Perfect in District Play

The Central Lady Cats continued their hot streak with a 49-31 win over the Abilene Lady Eagles on Friday.

Behind big offensive showings from Parris Parmer and Anjelina Humphreys, the Lady Cats remained perfect in District 3-6A. Humphreys shot 60 percent from the field and Parmer had the team-high 12 points in the win.

Parmer was two rebounds shy of a double-double for the Lady Cats.

Central jumped out on Abilene for an 11-5 after the first quarter. The two teams matched each other by scoring 10 points each in the second quarter for Central to go into halftime leading 21-15.

The Lady Cats then outscored Abilene 28-16 in the second half to seal the win and move to 4-0 in district play.

Central (20-5, 4-0) will host Fort Worth Richland on Jan. 8 looking to continue this momentum. 

Sonora Rolls to Commanding Win Over TLCA

The Sonora Lady Broncos jumped out early and never looked back for a 48-22 road win over the TLCA Lady Eagles Tuesday night.  

The first quarter started with the Lady Broncos started out in a press that cause many turnovers and let them get out to a 9-4 lead. Sonora continued to play stellar defense shutting out TLCA until 2 minutes, 46 seconds left in the period. 

After they finally got on the board, Kait Kirkland went on a scoring spree, putting up seven points before the half ended. The Lady Broncos still led the Lady Eagles 24-11. 

The third quarter was the most competitive quarter of the ball game, with the the Lady Broncos narrowly outscoring the Lady Eagles 9-7. 

TLCA played a good defense after getting into the press and then playing the 1-3-1 in the half court. 

To end the game, Skylar Harris for the Lady Broncos scored eight fourth quarter points to end the game at 48-22. 

Mark Kyle Johnson for the Broncos finished with 14 points and five rebounds. Brae Harris finished just shy of a double-double with nine points, 11 rebounds and eight steals.

Kirkland finished with 12 points.

Sonora (19-5, 3-2) holds firmly in third place in district 4-3A with a non-district meeting with Cornerstone Christian on Tuesday, Jan. 8.

TLCA (1-8, 0-4) hosts Grape Creek on Jan. 8.

Walker's 21 Lifts No. 6 Garden City to District Opening Win

Senior forward Lyndee Walker stole the show in no. 6-ranked Garden City's 41-30 win over Borden County to open play in District 8-1A.

The Lady Bearkats had to fight off a scrappy Borden County team to take a 19-15 lead into the halftime break. Garden City then took control in the third quarter.

The Lady Bearkats outscored Borden County 16-3 in the third frame behind eight points from Walker and Garden City's lead grew to 35-18.

Borden County didn't shy away from the dominant Lady Kats, however, and put up a comeback effort that ended with the Lady Coyotes outscoring Garden City 12-6 in the fourth.

Walker was the game-high scorer with 21 points.

Garden City (20-3, 1-0) will travel to Lamesa Klondike on Jan. 8 to continue district play.

Christoval Doubles Winters in District Opener

The Christoval Lady Cougars used consistent offense to blow past the Winters Lady Blizzards 50-24 in their opening game of District 7-2A.

Christoval jumped on Winters early in the first quarter to take a 12-4 lead.

Graci Jones then got hot in the second quarter by scoring seven of Christoval's 13 points to extend their lead to 25-12 at the half.

With Jones' third three pointer of the game and six points from Sterling Baker, Christoval once again grew their lead, this time to 38-21 after the third. Winters' Karlee Busher tallied six points in the quarter to help Winters try to stay close.

But the Blizzards went cold, getting outscored 12-3 in the final frame.

Jones finished with a game-high 15 points and three three pointers.

Christoval (11-9, 1-0) has now won four of their last five and will look to build on that momentum with a road trip to Ozona on Tuesday, Jan. 8.

Winters (8-14, 0-1) will look to bounce back at Miles next Tuesday.

No. 23 Robert Lee's Upset Bid of No. 12 Blackwell Falls Just Short

The no. 23-ranked Robert Lee Lady Steers' couldn't hang on to their 25-17 halftime lead in a 43-40 loss to no. 12 Blackwell in District 11-1A on Friday.

The Lady Steers took an 11-7 lead after the first quarter thanks to three pointers from Kari O'Dell and Kay Puentez. That lead grew to 25-17 behind Braylee Hood's six points in the second.

Out of halftime, Blackwell began to chip away at Robert Lee's lead and outscored the Lady Steers 9-6 in the third. Yet, Robert Lee still led 31-26 heading into the fourth.

Behind Madison Solis' six points in the fourth, Blackwell erupted to outscore the Lady Steers 17-9 in the final frame and complete the comeback.

Hood finished with a team-high 10 points in the loss.

Robert Lee (13-4, 2-2) will look to bounce back when they host rival Sterling City on Jan. 8.

Explosive Offense Lifts Water Valley Past Bronte

The Water Valley Lady Wildcats used a strong offensive showing to down rival Bronte 53-29 in District 11-1A on Friday night.

The Lady Cats had four players in double figures scoring. Those four were the only players to score for Water Valley.

Water Valley took a solid 12-6 lead after the first quarter thanks to Kalysta Minton-Holland's four points and Kenzie Jordan and Baily Dawson posting three points each.

Dawson found the hot hand for the Lady Cats in the second quarter by putting up seven points to help Water Valley move further ahead at 26-10.

The Lady Longhorns held close with Water Valley in the third at 11-8 behind three points from Kristen Stilley. Kirstyn Greebon held Bronte at bay with her seven points, including a three pointer, to keep Water Valley up 37-18 after three quarters.

The two teams then combined for 27 points in an explosive fourth quarter. Minton-Holland and Jordan each had six points in the final quarter to lift Water Valley to the win.

Greebon had the game-high of 15 points. Minton-Holland and Jordan each had 14 points. Dawson finished with 10 points.

E'Lexia Davis finished with Bronte's team-high of eight points. Six of those came from behind the arc.

Water Valley improves to 3-2 in District 11-1A and stays in contention for a playoff spot. They'll face off with district front-runner and no. 21-ranked Veribest on Jan. 8.

Bronte falls to 1-3 in district play with a home meeting with Blackwell coming on Jan. 8.
