AUSTIN, TX-- A state representative is fed up with the absence of the state's biggest college football rivalry and filed a bill that would force it to resume after a long hiatus.
District 122 representative Lyle Larson, a 1981 graduate of Texas A&M, filed House Bill 412 "After another Thanksgiving void of one of the most historic collegiate football rivalries," he wrote in a tweet.
If passed, the bill would force the two teams to play on the fourth Thursday, Friday or Saturday of November, KTXS reports.
As an incentive to get both teams to play, the bill says state funding for academic scholarships will not be awarded to players on the respective football teams should either team refuse to play.
The two teams haven't played since 2011 when Texas won 27-25 on a last-second field goal by Justin Tucker.

Representative Larson should be run out of office for spending time fretting over a college football game. I'm fairly certain that the voters in his district did not elect him for the purpose of whining over his "Thanksgiving void" and to waste time filing House Bill 412 when there are more than enough pressing issues that need tending to in our state capital. I miss that game too, but I didn't run for office in an effort to try to force two colleges to play each other every year. Am I missing something here?

PermalinkLol, with all the issues our legislature needs to be concerned with, THIS is what he's spending time in? Surely there are more important voids he can help fill?

PermalinkDUH, I want my football rivalry back say's the legislator. He is not the first to legislate his own interest. Pathetic

PermalinkThe very heart and soul of TAMU revolves around that rivalry. I was appalled when that game was retired, and will welcome the return whenever it may happen. I'm just not sure it should be a state congressional decision simply because there's so much money in NCAA division I sports these days. I'm actually surprised that the greedy regent boards of both schools haven't done so already.
