Eldorado's Freshman Phenom Earns Player of the Week Honors After Dominant Showing

ELDORADO, TX-- It’s time to announce the San Angelo Live Player of the Week for Week 10.

After guiding his team to their first district title in six years with a 48-0 win over Menard on Friday, Eldorado freshman Korbin Covarrubiaz is our Player of the Week.

Friday night, Covarrubiaz put on a show, going 18-of-28 passing for 262 yards and a touchdown while rushing for another 52 yards and two touchdowns on 4 carries.

Covarrubiaz took over for his older brother Kevan, a junior, in week three after suffering another knee injury. Kevan missed all of 2017 with an injured left knee. He injured his right knee in their game against Brackett this year.

Since taking over, Korbin has opened up Eldorado’s passing game. The freshman has completed 71 of 118 passes for 1,099 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Much like his brother, Korbin has shown he is more than capable of running the ball throughout the season. While his 61 yards rushing may not show it, his five rushing touchdowns does. That mark is third best on the team behind Kevan’s six.

After losing his first two starts against Iraan and McCamey, Korbin and the Eagles have been dominant. The Eagles have won four straight games -- all in district play -- by a combined score of 178-3 since those losses.

Eldorado will look to win the outright District 8-2A Division II crown on the road against Christoval this Friday.
