Fuchs, Defense Lifts Hawks to Thrilling District Title-Clinching Win

 

WALL, TX— The Wall Hawks beat the Breckenridge Buckaroos Friday 28-22 in a last-second thriller to clinch their eight-straight district championship. 

Wall Started the game on a great note with Chase Rios runnings for a 45-yard touchdown. 

It didn’t take long, though, for the Buckaroos. They scored on the very first play of their possession with QB Kevin Franco throwing a 64-yard touchdown to Kyler Knight. They missed the extra point, which made the game 7-6.

Wall’s offense came out hot to begin the game. They got first down after first down until finally, Mason Fuchs ran one in from the 1-yard line. This brought the game to 14-6.

That's when the defense started to show up for both teams with neither team giving an inch the remainder of the quarter. 

To start the second quarter, Fuchs threw an interception to Jake Escalon, but the Hawks stayed strong. This ended up with Cameron Barnes coming up with an interception for Wall.

After they got the stop though the buckaroos forced Rios to fumble the ball on their own thirty-five yard line. Barnes ended up coming with another interception on this drive. 

Wall received the ball on the 1-yard line. On the very first, play they ended up giving up a safety. this brought the score 14-8

After the free kick, the Buckaroos drove down the field and scored with 13 seconds left in the half. They went into the locker room up 15-14

“We knew he was going to bounce back. He’s battle tested,” Coach Guy said of Fuchs. “We knew we were just going to have to keep giving him looks and opportunities. He got in a groove and came back and ran the midline good in the second half which slowed the game down for him which set him up for that perfect pass at the end.”

To kick off the second half, the Hawks handed out another three-and-out. That led to another Fuchs touchdown from 34 yards.

Breckenridge had to fight for the next drive but after a tough couple third down conversions they finally found a hole for Angel Ruiz to run through to get a one yard rushing touchdown. 

At the end of the third quarter, the score was 22-22.

This game went down to the last five minutes when Fuchs found Mason Kindle for a 48-yard bomb to push them ahead 28-22. They would miss the extra point. 

The Buckaroos did get in shooting range at their own 16 yard line with three seconds left. Wall got the sack to finish the game 28-22.

“Multiple goal line stands and big defensive stops is really what helped us out tonight,” Guy said. “This is exactly where we thought we would be.” Coach Guy of District Championship “we thought we had the kids we needed to win a district championship”

Wall (6-2, 4-0) will finish the regular season on the road at Early next week. Breckenridge falls to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in District 3-3A Division I.
