Dutton Earns Player of the Week Honor After Crucial Win in Week 9

SONORA, TX-- The Sonora Broncos’ season was rejuvenated in week 9 with a 29-9 win over Comfort.

Leading the charge was senior Wesley Dutton, who accounted for 220 yards total and three rushing touchdowns. For that, Dutton has earned San Angelo Live Player of the Week honors for week 9.

To go with his three rushing touchdowns, Dutton had 157 yards rushing on a night where Sonora desperately needed a win.

The win put Sonora (3-5, 1-2) in a three-way tie with Comfort (3-5, 1-2) and Johnson City (3-5, 1-2) for third place in District 13-3A Division II. Sonora and Johnson City will meet this week. A win over Johnson City would clinch a playoff berth for the Broncos.

Overall, Dutton has rushed for 397 yards, thrown for 366 yards and has 447 yards receiving with 15 total touchdowns.

The 5-foot-11 senior started off the season as a receiver in the Broncos’ offense. It appeared Brian Van Winkle was going to keep their high octane offense running smoothly. However, Dutton has taken the reins the last two weeks and Sonora has taken to the ground rather than the air.

The award is the first for any Sonora player. It’s also the third time a quarterback has earned the honor. The previous two went to Central QB Malachi Brown in week 4 and week 8.
