SAN ANGELO, TX-- In week 4 of the high school football season, some Concho Valley players threw themselves into the spotlight with some tremendous performances. Some showed glimpses of greatness.
They'll look to continue that trend as week 5 is upon us.
Here are the three players to watch in the Concho Valley during week 5 of the football season:
Kye Herbert, Wall Hawks, So., RB
Last week, Herbert got a call-up to the Hawks' varsity squad in their 40-20 win over Sonora. The sophomore made the most of that call-up and will get another chance to showcase his ability this week against Big Spring.
Herbert got six carries for 52 yards rushing in the win.
While the youngster accounted for a fraction of the Hawks 330 yards rushing, he showed good intangibles. Herbert showed good vision and the ability to run north and south like you want in Wall's veer offense. The sophomore also showed speed on his six carries, eluding defenders on multiple occasions last Thursday.
The Hawks will hope he continues that trend in their interclass matchup with Big Spring this Friday.
Tyler Vaughn, Ballinger Bearcats, So., RB/QB
The Bearcats open District 4-3A Division II against a stout Cisco team.
Last time out, the Bearcats played Colorado City close, but eventually lost 42-34.
Vaughn led the run-heavy team with 111 yards rushing and two touchdowns on five carries in the win. Those two scores were his first of the year and the yardage was almost twice as much as he had in the previous two games combined.
Overall this season, the sophomore has accounted for 168 yards this year. That mark is good for third on the team.
In order for the Bearcats to have success against the Loboes, Vaughn will need to build on his week 3 performance. That will give Ballinger three legitimate weapons in the backfield with quarterback Edgar Nunez and running back Cooper Bean.
Anthony Gonzales, Central Bobcats, Jr., DE
In the Bobcats' 31-20 win over El Paso Pebble Hills, opposing quarterback Sebastian Ochoa has limited time to make passes and their running backs didn't break free like they did in previous games.
That was highlighted by Gonzales' three sacks on Ochoa.
This week Central gets a Weatherford team that loves to sling the football around the yard. Secondary play will be a big factor in keeping the Kangaroos' receivers in check.
A good pass rush against quarterback Ken Seals, although, could do the trick just as well.
Gonzales, along with Xy'Kerion Paulk and linebacker Daylon Green, will be tasked with that challenge this Friday in Weatherford.
