BRONTE, TX-- The Bronte Longhorns are off to a flying start in six-man football.
Last year, the Longhorns won just one game. This year, they have won their first two.
You could attribute their hot start to numerous factors like the hiring of former Balmorhea assistant Jourmain Matta. But a coach’s influence only goes so far.
Senior leadership is what the Longhorns have used on the field to start 2-0 for the first time since 2016. At the forefront of that group of seniors is Garrett Knight.
Against Loraine this past Friday, Knight carried the ball 20 time for 262 yards and seven touchdowns with 18 yards and one touchdown passing to power Bronte to a 60-27 win in week 2.
That performance is good enough to earn San Angelo Live Player of the Week honors in week 2.
The Longhorns had to overcome a 15-point deficit heading into the second quarter.
After allowing 27 points through the first quarter, Bronte rattled off 48 points unanswered to win the game.
Knight’s seven rushing touchdowns came on consecutive scores for the Longhorns, including a 62-yard run in the second quarter to pull Bronte within two points.
The senior running back also capped of Bronte’s scoring with his 18-yard touchdown pass to Colton McIntire in the third quarter.
Bronte travels to Roscoe Highland (1-1) this Friday. Highland narrowly lost to Blackwell 27-24 in week 2.
