SAN ANGELO, TX-- Central Bobcat quarterback and Texas Tech commit Maverick McIvor appears to be done for the year, a report from San Angelo sportswriter Charles Bryce says.
McIvor's father, Rick, shared the news via his personal Facebook page, said Bryce, who is friends with the Texas Longhorn standout on the popular social media site. The post says McIvor will undergo surgery to repair the injury.
The Bobcat quarterback also tweeted out "God's plan" with a prayer emoji on his personal Twitter page.
McIvor went down with an apparent knee injury after a 16-yard run with 8:40 left in the third quarter of the Bobcat's 49-3 win over Del Rio this past Friday. At the time, Central held a commanding 28-3 lead on the Rams.
At the time, the Bobcats did not know the severity of the injury and Central head coach Brent Davis said he hoped it was "just a bruise" in his post game interview.
The 6-foot-3 quarterback was described as the leader of the Bobcat team by Davis after the win.
"It’s deflating, yeah," Davis said on Friday. "He’s a Division I quarterback. He’s the leader of this football team without a doubt.”
McIvor threw for 244 yards and four touchdowns in Central's second win of the season. In week one, the Texas Tech commit threw for 324 yards and rushed for 45 with three total touchdowns in their win over Killeen Shoemaker. Last year, McIvor posted 3,415 yards passing, 870 yards rushing and 15 yards receiving to go with 52 total touchdowns en route to the honorable mention All-State team.
After Central's starter left Friday's game, sophomore Malachi Brown, who normally plays slot receiver, stepped in for McIvor.
Brown left his mark on the game as soon as he stepped into the quarterback role, rushing for a 4-yard touchdown on the very next play.
Overall, the sophomore was 4-of-7 with 48 yards and one touchdown passing to go with 60 rushing yards and his lone rushing touchdown on four carries.
The Bobcats close out their non-district slate over the next two weeks against perennial 5A power Cedar Park (0-2) and last year's bi-district opponent El Paso Pebble Hills (2-0). Facing quality opponents like those two will likely aid the expedited development of Brown as a quarterback if he takes over in offensive coordinator Kevin Crane's high-octane offense.
Bringing a receiver in to direct Central's offense on the field is not new for the Bobcats. In 2016, McIvor was a receiver for the Bobcats while Cal Vincent operated the offense. Vincent went down injured in Central's third round playoff loss to Allen that year and McIvor had to take over the offense.
The Bobcats face Cedar Park at Gupton Stadium on Friday, Sept. 14, at 7:00 p.m.
