AREA FOOTBALL: Bronte Opens Six-Man Era in Mercy-Rule Fashion

 

RISING STAR, TX-- The six-man era in Bronte started a day earlier than anticipated, with Bronte and Rising Start moving their game to Friday.

The Longhorns opened the six-man era with a 44-0 mercy rule victory over Rising Star.

Garrett Knight and Riley McIntyre each tallied a pair of touchdowns in the win.

Knight scored his two touchdowns on a 27-yard and 21-yard run in the first quarter. He also tallied all 56 of Bronte's 65 rushing yards.

The Longhorns also forced four turnovers from Rising Star.

McIntyre picked up a pair of fumbles and went 10 yards the other way for the Longhorn's two other scores in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Tanner Braswell found Rance Siler for a 1-yard touchdown pass to put the Longorns up 38-0.

Later that quarter, Danny Stensby put the game away at 44-0 with a 9-yard rushing touchdown.

Bronte (1-0) will host Loraine next Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Sonora Overcomes Slow Start to Claim Rivalry Win over Ozona

The Sonora Broncos started off slow, but eventually took home a 34-19 win over rival Ozona on Friday.

The Broncos outgained the Lions 376 yards to 238 in total offense.

Senior quarterback Brian Van Winkle found junior receiver Brock Aschenbeck in the endzone from 23 yards out to open the scoring with 11:05 left in the first quarter. Brandon Martinez’s extra-point was no good and the lead stood at 6-0.

Sebastian De La Cruz found paydirt from 8 yards out for Ozona. Orlando Garza split the uprights with his extra-point to put Ozona up 7-6 with 8:25 left in the first.

Van Winkle and Aschenbeck would connect again for their second score of the game. Van Winkle found Evan Shannon in the endzone for the two-point conversion to put Sonora up 14-7 with 1:09 left in the first period.

Alec Lara and the Lions would storm back with two unanswered scores. Lara found Zachary Talamantez for a 50-yard touchdown. Garza’s extra-point was blocked, keeping Ozona one point away in the second quarter.

Garza then connected from 40 yards out to put Ozona up 16-14 with 2:48 left in the half.

Van Winkle connected for his third touchdown pass in the third quarter when he found Wesley Dutton for a 14-yard score. A successful extra-point put Sonora up 21-16 midway through the third.

Garza hit his second field goal of the game, this time from 30 yards out, to pull Ozona within two points at 21-19.

Sonora’s Willie Johnson rushed for an 18-yard score and Van Winkle connected with Dutton once again from 42 yards out to put the game away at 34-19.

Van Winkle finished 21-for-37 with 280 yards and four scores with just one interception.

Aschenbeck hauled in nine passes for 126 yards to go with his two touchdowns.

The Broncos (1-0) will next host Lamesa next Friday while Ozona (0-1) will host Iraan.
