AREA VOLLEYBALL: Wall Downs Rival Jim Ned in Straight Sets

 

TUSCOLA, TX-- The Wall Lady Hawks were able to pick up a big non-district win against rival Jim Ned on Tuesday.

Wall kicked off the win in dominant fashion with a 25-13 win. Jim Ned put up more of a fight in the second set, but the Lady Hawks prevailed 25-23. The Lady Hawks took the third set 25-18.

Candra Burnett continued her solid defensive run of form from the Nita Vannoy Memorial Tournament. Burnett finished the night with 15 digs to her credit. Kylie Phillips wasn't far behind with 10 digs in the win.

Offensively, Rachel Stewart led the Lady Hawk's balanced attack with seven kills. Setting up that offense Mallory Melton with 11 assists.

The Lady Hawks improve to 9-8. Wall will travel to the Fillie Festival in Denver City this Thursday through Saturday.

Sonora Suffers First True Away Loss

The Sonora Lady Broncos found stiff competition against the Johnson City Lady Eagles.

Johnson City handed Sonora a straight-set loss, winning 25-13, 27-25 and 25-17.

Senior hitter Mary Kyle Johnson led the Lady Bronco’s offense with seven kills.

Defensively, Sonora struggled by failing to record a block. However, Camille and Raeven Harris were bright spots by recording 17 and 13 digs respectively to lead the team.   

The loss was the first true road loss for the Lady Broncos.

The Lady Broncos fall to 5-9 on the season.

Sonora will travel to Brackettville next Tuesday, Aug. 28, before hosting the Sonora Tournament that Friday through Saturday.

Bronte Falls in Five Sets to 3A Clyde

The Lady Longhorns held a two set-to-one lead against Class 3A Clyde, but could not claim the fourth set and overall win.

Bronte claimed a 25-20 win in the first and third sets with a 25-22 set loss sandwiched between. Clyde looked to have a comfortable, seven-point lead in the fourth set, but the Lady Longhorns pulled within one point at 22-21. However, the comeback would fall short and Clyde would take the fourth set 25-23 before winning the fourth set 15-12.

The Lady Longhorns will next face Coahoma at home on Friday, Aug. 24.

Hawley Hands Miles Straight-Set Loss

The Miles Lady Bulldogs fell in straight sets to the Hawley Lady Bearcats on Tuesday.

Hawley won 25-16, 25-21 and 25-17 to claim the win.

Libby Crouch stood out both offensively and defensively for the Lady Bulldogs, tallying a team-leading four kills and five digs.

Allie Kalina set up the Lady Bulldogs offense with nine assists. Halle Hudson also had five assists to her name.

The loss was Miles’ third in a row during a stretch of seven games in five days.

Next the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Bronte for the Showdown Tournament this Friday and Saturday.
