SAN ANGELO, TX -- Gilbert Gallegos has officially filed to run against incumbent Tom Green County Pct. 4 Commissioner Bill Ford in the Nov 6, 2018 general election.
According to a press release from Gallegos, he is a lifelong San Angelo resident who is a fiscal conservative. He says he feels now is the time to vote for a change and to let this court know that it is not going to allow this to go unchecked. “We can do better and we will do better if you vote on Nov. 6.”
Gallegos says he will donate half his salary to benefit county employees and their families. “Here is my promise to you: If I am elected I will never vote in favor of a pay raise for members of the commissioner’s court. I will donate half my net base salary to a scholarship fund to benefit county employees and their immediate family members who attend Howard College or Angelo State University. Investing in people that want to further their education will pay dividends in the future. GTE invested in me and this is my of investing in young people.” said Gallegos.
Gallegos attended the salary grievance hearing and questioned why elected officials needed a raise. “I favor elimination of the $11,259 annual vehicle allowance for all members of the court and replacing it with the use of county vehicles when needed for the performance of official county duties. I don’t want or need the taxpayers to buy me a new pickup.”
Gallegos attended Sacred Heart Catholic School, Edison Junior High School and Central High School. He attended Angelo State University while working at GTE and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.
Gallegos retired from GTE/Verizon in 2014. He is the former president of the Angelo State University Alumni Association, volunteered as a United Way Loaned Executive and as a coach and member of the North Side Advisory Board for the North Side Boys and Girls Club.
Gallegos’ name will not appear on the ballot, but it will be in the voting booth. Voters will have to write in his name.

For all those who want change in the County Commissioner Court, this is the time. Here is a candidate who is willing to donate half his salary towards a scholarship fund. And also willing to drive a County vehicle thus eliminating the $11,259 allowance. I wonder if this would fly with other County Officials.
The thing is that many City/County officials who are running for office or serving have already had a nice career. Now they are wanting to help the community and city by offering their experience as Mr. Gallegos is willing to do.

PermalinkFord can't, or won't, be able to compete with that level of commitment to public service. However, not being on the ballot will be a tough hurdle to overcome, I don't ever remember a write-in candidate winning. I'm betting the other commissioners are not thrilled about his refusal to take a vehicle allowance.
