First-Ever Stars and Strikes All-Star Softball Game Brings City and Goodfellow AFB Closer

SAN ANGELO, TX-- Goodfellow Air Force Base hosted the first of what they hope to be many Stars and Strikes All-Star Softball Game.

“We’re looking at, in the future, doing two games here. One in the summer and one in the fall,” said John Henry Perez of the City of San Angelo. “We’re trying to keep it as long as we can.”

The game featured the best athletes from the military base and some of the best from the league put on by the City of San Angelo.

The San Angelo All-Stars scored early and often to win 23-6 thanks, in large part, to David Rios’ three home runs. Those three dingers made up Rios’ 3-for-3 performance.

“The guys we chose to play, they were asked and they stepped up to the plate and they took the honor to come out and be a part of the City team,” said Perez. “Coming out here, they were ready to play...You could tell they were ready to make a statement saying the City League has a lot of good players out there.”

Brandon Brown of the Goodfellow All-Stars had the best offensive performance on his team, going 2-for-2 with a home run and a run scored in the loss.

Aside from the competitive nature of the game, the purpose was to bring both the Goodfellow AFB and San Angelo Communities together.

The game did just that.

United States Representative Mike Conaway was one of many San Angelo dignitaries on hand and threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the game.

Conaway spoke before the game and mentioned how crucial Goodfellow AFB is to San Angelo and the need to keep the two communities close for when each are in need.

As Perez said and Conaway echoed in his pregame address, both sides want to keep the game going, but there isn’t a timetable for a second game to take place at the moment.
