The 911 call went out at 1:15 a.m. this morning for a crash on the Houston-Harte Expressway near the entry ramp near Lowe's and Walmart. The crash involved a motorcycle. When we arrived, it was the scene of a fatality: A body draped in a white sheet on the ground. About 30-40 yards away was wreckage of a motorcycle, make and model unknown.
The Houston-Harte Expressway was completely closed, all four lanes blocked, from approximately Southwest where McDonald's is to Arden Road near Jim Bass Ford.
The crash was a single motorcycle from our observation of the crash scene. Witnesses stopped and waited for police to arrive.
According to the investigating officer, the motorcycle was westbound on Houston-Harte when he lost control. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Update May 11, 10:50 a.m.
San Angelo Police Officer Steven Quade investigated this crash. He said that the motorcycle driver was traveling at a high rate of speed after entering Loop 306 at Knickerbocker Road. He was westbound and lost control when he hit the guardrail coming around the curve near Sherwood Way. He flew off the guardrail and the motorcycle slid between the medians. The rider died in the crash. Quade said that they have not performed the required tests as of 4 a.m. Sunday morning, so they did not yet know if alcohol was a contributing factor.
