Updated Saturday 6/30/2018 4:10 p.m. Forecasters say thunderstorms are possible this afternoon as scattered thunderstorms may develop by 5 PM along and south of a line from Sterling City to San Angelo to Sonora. Strongest storms will produce gusty winds, brief heavy rain and dangerous lightning strikes.
This afternoon and tonight isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible across the area generally west and north of a Sonora to Lake Brownwood line. Dangerous lightning, gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall are possible with the storms.
SAN ANGELO, TX -- There is a chance for thunderstorms across West Central Texas Saturday especially Sterling County and the Big Country.
According to the National Weather Service, before 930 a.m., an area of showers and thunderstorms will move northeast across the western Concho Valley and into the western Big Country. Most of this activity will occur west of a Sweetwater to San Angelo to Mertzon line. Heavy rain from the thunderstorms could cause localized ponding of water on roads and low water crossings in Sterling County. Rainfall amounts of one half to one inch are likely in parts of Sterling County. Elsewhere, rainfall amounts of one tenth to one quarter of an inch are possible through 930 a.m.
Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will be possible late this afternoon through tonight for much of the region, with the best chances being in the Northern Edwards Plateau, Concho Valley and Big Country. Main threats are brief downpours and frequent lightning.
The forecast calls for a 30 percent chance of rain today and a 20 percent chance tonight with high temperatures around 100 degrees.
