San Angelo LIVE! is looking for motivated individuals to join their sports team in the fall on an internship. There is a fall internship, which runs from late August until December, and an 11-month internship, which runs from August 2018 to June 2019.
Sports journalism is an intense, fast-paced, adrenaline filled profession.
The San Angelo LIVE! sports department is one of the fastest growing departments in the state.
Starting last August, when we began covering sports full-time, we started small, focusing on the one thing that captivates Texans year-round: High School Football. That turned into basketball, then baseball and softball.
In total, our sports department reached over 520,000 people, more than five times the population of San Angelo.
Our writers were able to get in front of representatives from big name organizations like Fox Sports Southwest, Dave Campbell's Texas Football, The Austin American-Statesman and countless other media organizations from across the state. That means you will have the opportunity to get your name out to important people to jumpstart your career.
Your duties as an intern will include, but aren't limited to:
- Traveling to games in sports like football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, soccer and softball
- Keeping stats for the games
- Writing recaps of games covered
- Generating feature story ideas and content for teams, athletes, etc. in the area
- Entering scores during our Friday Night Scores Round Up
- Generate feature story ideas.
This internship is more hands on than you'll find anywhere else.
Interns must have their own laptop for this position.
The schedule is very flexible, as well, with most events taking place on weekends or in the evenings. For non-football events, you will be in the field for no more than four hours. Football games take up more time. Typically, our writers arrive at football games two hours prior to kickoff and must have their stories in before midnight unless a game runs late.
This internship is unpaid, but there is compensation for travel outside of the immediate San Angelo area should the occasion present itself.
If you are interested, email the sports editor, Sam Fowler, at [email protected] to apply for the position.
