SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Juneteenth Committee presents the 2018 Juneteenth Parade and Gathering at the Park on Saturday, June 16.
Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day and Freedom Day, is the holiday commemorating June 19, 1865, when the announcement of the abolition of slavery reached Texas.
The parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. Lineup for the parade will begin at 9:00 a.m. at 9th Street and Martin Luther King Dr. The parade goes straight down MLK and ends at Martin Luther King Park. Anyone is allowed to join the parade. To enter and ride in parade, contact Aubrey Todd at 325-657-0046.
The events and activities that will be held at the park are free to the public! The activities in the park include:
- Reading of the Proclamation from the City of San Angelo City Council Woman Lucy Gonzales
- Reading of Orders 3- Read on June 19th on the shores of Galveston
- Chess Tournament
- Dominoes Tournament
- Card Tournament (Bid Whist and Spades)
- Dance Contest (Top Hits from 1950’s-1965, 1965-1980’s, 1980’s-1995)
- Oral History Session- The Britt Institute
- Face Painting
- Living History Display from the “Buffalo Soldiers Living History”
- Display from the San Angelo State Park- drawing for free admissions
- Introduction of New Black History Magazine- The Legacy News
- NAACP- voter registration and membership drive
- Hear from local political candidate- Sally Ayana
- Texas Coalition of Black Democrats- register to vote and membership drive
Music will be provided by 100.5 KCGF-FM Sunday Morning Glory Radio.
