SALEM, VA-- The no.6 Angelo State Rambelle softball team is back in the Division II Softball World Series for the sixth time in school history.
This is also the second time in school history that the Rambelles have made it in consecutive years. The Rambelles last did that with consecutive trips in 2009 and 2010.
The Rambelles made it all the way to the National Championship Series in 2017 before losing to Minnesota State-Mankato in consecutive games.
Head Coach Travis Scott’s team made it back to Salem by sweeping the Lone Star Conference regular season and tournament titles, as well as maintaining an undefeated record in the 2018 postseason.
The Rambelles dispatched Cameron University, Colorado Christian University and West Texas A&M in the South Central Regional Tournament before sweeping Texas A&M-Commerce in the Super Regionals.
Heading up the Rambelle’s return trip have been senior pitchers Brandy Marlett and Morgan Hill.
Marlett earned her third and fourth career All-American honors by being named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Second Team and the D2CCA Third Team yesterday. Those accolades go along with her LSC Pitcher of the Year and All-Region honors this season.
The right-handed hurler has thrown 174 innings for the Rambelles in 2018 with a 24-3 record, 1.85 ERA, 188 strikeouts and two saves.
Hill has been just as good in the circle in 2018, throwing 173 innings with a 26-4 record, 1.62 ERA and 145 strikeouts. Those numbers were good enough for the left-handed Salado native to earn First Team All-LSC and Second Team All-Region honors.
Offensively, Lubbock Coronado product Taegan Kirk leads the offense for the Rambelles. The junior catcher leads the team in batting average with a .420 clip, doubles with 19, RBIs with 66 and slugging percentage with a .773 clip.
During the first game of the Super Regional, Kirk drilled a game-tying, three-run home run to help propel the Rambelles to a thrilling come-from-behind win.
The Rambelles (52-7) are seeded fourth in the tournament and open play today against five-seed West Chester (45-13) at 12:30 p.m.
For the Golden Rams of West Chester, this is their second-ever trip to the DII Softball World Series.
The game can be heard on AngeloSports.com where Jeremy Bryant will have the call.
