Bronze Statues Depicting San Angelo Area Natives to be Unveiled

SAN ANGELO, TX -- Two larger than life bronze statues depicting the Jumano indians and their story of a mysterious Lady in Blue will be unveiled Sunday culminating the three day celebration of San Angelo’s historic beginnings.  

The bronze statue project has been in the works for a number of years.  Historic Beginnings of San Angelo Director Tilly Chandler led the effort to bring the statues to San Angelo.  There was a competition in 2017 to decide which artist would be commissioned for the project. The winner was Vic Payne of Cody, Wyoming.  Payne designed two statues; one depicting a Jumano brave and the other depicting Maria de Agreda (the Lady in Blue) with a Jumano girl.

The bronze statues will be located along the Concho River behind the former Western Mattress building.  

The story of the Lady in Blue will be celebrated with a Musical and Ballet Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Murphey Performance Hall, a Marian Conference Saturday and Sunday at the McNease Convention Center, and the unveiling of the statues on Sunday afternoon.
