Home Goes Up in Smoke Behind The Village

SAN ANGELO, TX — San Angelo firefighters are knocking down a fire at a house in the 200 block of S. Garrett. Four pumper fire trucks, rescue 1, and San Angelo EMS are on the scene as smoke pours out of the attic. On the left side of the house are visible flames.

Firefighters are attacking the fire from all directions. It appears to be an offensive operation where firefighters arrived quick enough to prevent the flames from overtaking the structure.

We will report more once the fire marshal begins his investigation.

Update 4:20 p.m.

Firefighters discovered a locked bathroom in the home where they reported "a whole bunch of cats in there." Cat rescue operation is underway. In the meantime, firefighters reported all other rooms were clear.

Update 4:25 p.m.

Two additional fires are reported. One is at S. Madison and Avenue M. According to the radio, the garbage disposal in that residence was "smoking." The inhabitants of that home are evacuating the home.

Meanwhile, on S. Concho Dr. a grass fire was reported. Firefighters called for support from the airport fire station.

Update 5:50 p.m.

According to Lt. C.B. Russell of the San Angelo Fire Department, Ladder 1 arrived first, located a fire on the left side of the house, and performed a “transitional attack” on the fire from the front yard.

As soon as Engine 5 arrived, its crew gained entry into the front of the house and cleared it of flames.

Russell said all of the fire was on the outside of the house. Nothing inside was on fire.

Russell said the owner and family were not present when the fire broke out. “The owner did call and asked for us to find their cats,” Russell said. The cats were located unharmed. Also, the family dog met the firefighters at the front door. The dog, too, was unharmed. “There was smoke inside the house, but that was it,” Russell said.
