A young male, approximately college-aged, on a bike was struck by a GMC Sierra Pickup near the intersection of Rosemont and Ave. N. The victim has refused treatment at the scene from EMS. The victim appears to be shaken up, but not seriously injured. The driver of the pickup is also at the scene.
San Angelo Police are investigating.
We will have more as the investigation unfolds.
Update 5:46 p.m.
San Angelo Police Officer Loudermilk was the investigating officer. "This truck [the Sierra] was stopped at a stop sign, and he was going to go ahead and proceed to make a right turn [east, on Ave. N]. The pedocyclist was over here, on the side of the road traveling westbound [on Ave. N through the intersection]," Loudermilk said. At that point, the truck and the bicyclist "made contact."
The bicyclist has minor cuts and bruises, Loudermilk said. "But he's refused medical treatment."
The problem was that the bicyclist was riding his bike against the flow of traffic on the wrong side of Ave. N. However, Loudermilk said, a new law is in effect declaring that regardless of where a pedestrian or bicyclist is, or even if in the wrong, the pedestrian/bicyclist still has the right-of-way.
Loudermilk said that he has discretion in situations like these and that no citations will be issued.
