SAN ANGELO, TX -- While John Young sits in the Tom Green County Jail awaiting Judge Brock Jones’ decision on his motion for a new trial, the Texas Bar Association is seeking to disbar him.
According to Texas Lawyer, the Commission for Lawyer Discipline on Dec. 7 filed a compulsory discipline petition before the Texas Board of Disciplinary Appeals against Young, seeking to disbar him because he was convicted of four felonies.
As we reported during his trial, Young was found guilty by a jury of theft, money laundering and forgery and sentenced to 11 years in prison. His attorneys filed a motion for a new trial after a new witness came forward and swore that she watched Sweetwater attorney Chris Hartman, her ex-husband, forge the will.
The Commission for Lawyer Discipline alleged that Young’s crimes are intentional and serious under the Texas Rules of Disciplinary Procedure and that Young should be disbarred.
The board of disciplinary appeals is set to hear the matter Jan. 25.
Judge Jones said in court on Thursday that he would rule on the motion for a new trial on Jan. 22.
