SAN ANGELO, TX-- After this past weekend, football season is over or is coming to a close for some Concho Valley teams. For others, the push for playoff spots has heated up.
Week 10 also brought a few surprise results, such as Bronte tallying their first win in their final year of 11-man football, or Winters upsetting Cross Plains.
For the most part, week 10 solidified playoff spots for teams in the area
Central 21, Midland 14:
This win came against a Midland High team which gave Central their biggest test this season, surprisingly. Junior Quarterback Maverick McIvor went 22-42 passing with 217 yards and three touchdowns. Overall, the Bobcats finished with 315 total yards of offense. But it was Midland's offense which gave Central the test. The Bulldogs finished with 289 yards of total offense and made Central fans hold their breath with 50 seconds left in the contest. Midland High was facing a 4th-and-29 when Suddin Sapien found his receiver Jalen Terhune. Terhune broke a couple of tackles before being brought down three yards shy of the first-down, giving Central the win to move to 9-0 on the season.
What this means: Central's win sealed their fifth straight district title and gives them the first place spot as the Division Two representative for District 2-6A. That means Central is likely to have a home game in the first round of playoffs this year. Central will look to win the title outright and finish the regular season perfect when they host Amarillo Tascosa this Friday.
Lake View 19, Abilene Cooper 70:
Lake View's struggles continued against Abilene Cooper. The Chiefs acrued 62 rushing yards in this game while allowing 295 yards to Cooper. Overall, Cooper finished with 585 yards of total offense in the blowout win. Lake View is now 0-9 overall and 0-5 in district in their final season as a 5A program. The Chiefs will play in class 4A next season.
What this means: Lake View has one last chance to claim a win in 2017. The Chiefs will travel to Lubbock to face Lubbock Cooper this Friday.
Wall 76, Tornillo 0:
The Wall Hawks were the Wall Hawks in their win against the border town Tornillo. The Hawks racked up 468 yards of total offense with 50 of them coming through the air. Senior Quarterback Brock Rosenquist finished 2-for-3 passing with a passing touchdown to go with those 50 passing yards. Rosenquist also recorded a three-yard touchdown on his lone carry of the game. Seniors Casey Braden and Tymber Carr led the Hawk's rushing attack with a combined 324 yards and five touchdowns. The win also meant the Hawks moved to 9-0 this season.
What this means: The Hawks will take on Kermit (5-3, 3-0) this Friday for the District 2-3A D1 crown. The Kermit Yellowjackets are winners of their last three games.
Sonora 57, Ballinger 3:
The score tells the story well enough for this lopsided game. Sonora didn't allow a score until Ballinger kicked a field goal with 11 minutes left in the game. Sonora dominated offensively, putting up 564 yards of total offense. Sonora's defense was equally as dominant, allowing just 154 yards of offense for Ballinger. Sonora Senior Quarterback Kaden Cordell had a stellar night, putting up 261 yards of total offense and four touchdowns on his own. The result pushed Sonora's record to 9-0 while Ballinger fell to 3-6 and 1-2 in district play.
What this means: Sonora locked up a share of the District 3-3A D2 title with the win. The Broncos will take on TLCA this week looking to lock up the whole title and finish the year 10-0. Ballinger will travel to Alpine on Friday looking to gain some momentum heading into playoffs.
Mason 56, Junction 7:
Think Wall, but twice as dominant. That's Mason's defense. They have yet to allow more than a touchdown this season and Junction was the unfortunate recipient of the Puncher defense's punch last week. Mason's average points allowed has hovered just under four points per game for the majority of the season. The win pushes Mason's record to 9-0 while Junction is now 3-6.
What this means: Mason has captured their seventh-straight district title, a streak that dates back to 2011. The Punchers will be the one seed from District 14-2A D1 and a strong favorite to make it to back to Arlington.
Menard 27, Iraan 21:
In a down-to-the-wire game, Menard locked up a share of the district title over a storied Iraan program. The district title is the Yellowjacket's first since 2008. The 'Jackets put up 320 yards of offense in the nailbiter.
What this means: Going forward, Menard will have the one-seed out of their district while Iraan will have the two-seed.
Bronte 24, Baird 6
What this means: With their first win of 2017, Bronte is not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs in their final season of 11-man football. The Longhorn's hope, however, is slim. They are currently locked in a three-way tie with Baird and Miles. With the tie, fourth place would be decided off point differential. As things sit at the moment, Bronte is sitting outside at fifth looking in with a -62 differential, while Miles holds a -51 differential. Bronte's next game is against undefeated Albany. Miles faces Cross Plains this week. Cross Plains is coming off a tough loss to Winters so there's no telling which Buffalo squad will show up for Cross Plains. If Bronte can best Miles' differential after Friday, the Longhorns will book a ticket to the playoffs.
Water Valley 62, Santa Anna 6; Veribest 69, Paint Rock 14
This is old against new. Water Valley has a history of district championships and playoff appearances. Veribest made their first appearance last season. Veribest's win over Paint Rock moved the Falcon's record to 6-3, tying the school's record for most wins in a season. Ever since coming off a three-game losing skid that started in late September, Water Valley has come out unbeatable in their last two games. Both of those games, against Santa Anna and Paint Rock, ended in the mercy-rule for the Wildcats.
What these games mean: Both teams have secured a playoff spot for 2017 with 2-0 district records. That means Veribest and Water Valley will square off, in Veribest, for the district championship. Last year, Veribest knocked off Water Valley on the road to clinch their first ever playoff berth. The results also eliminate Paint Rock and Santa Anna from playoff contention.
