SAPD Chief Frank Carter was master of ceremonies.  He presented Martinez with a shadowbox with a U.S. flag that was flown over the police department, a badge, two challenge coins and his collar brass.  He also presented Martinez with a watch and a certificate of appreciation from the department and a letter of appreciation from the FBI.

Martinez’s youngest son read a letter from his oldest son, who is a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army stationed overseas and wasn’t able to attend the retirement ceremony.

Martinez said, “Steven Brown, Tom Adams, Harold Dominguez, and Daniel Valenzuela.  These are the past and present City managers.  They are all good men who took care of the 900 city employees, so I appreciate each and every one of them.”

Martinez named the chiefs he worked for, “Travis Johnson was chief when I got hired.  Ken Harrington, Russell Smith, Joe Gibson, Tim Vasquez and Frank Carter.  These are your past six chiefs and current chiefs and I had the honor of working under each and every one of them.”

There was a slideshow with photographs of Martinez throughout his career.  Members of many law enforcement agencies, current police officers and others attended the ceremony.

Attendees enjoyed cake and punch and other refreshments after the ceremony.
