High School Football: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly in Week 4

SAN ANGELO, TX — A few surprises were thrown out in week four, such as Sonora trailing most of their game against Jim Ned before senior quarterback Kaden Cordell scored on a 1-yard quarterback keeper to give the Broncos the lead. Week four also presented a few games that were nowhere close to out of the ordinary, like when the fourth-ranked Wall Hawks demolished Eastland 31-7. 

Here are some takeaways from week four:

The Good: Coleman's first win of 2017

After being held scoreless through the first three games of the season, the Coleman Bluecats scored 28 points against Brady in their first win of the season. The 28-19 victory for the Coleman Bluecats is sure to lift the spirits of their team, and they'll need that as they take on a good Clyde Bulldogs team this Friday.

The Bad: For Central, a win is a win

Going in to last Thursday's game against Killeen Shoemaker, many people, myself included, thought the Bobcats would run all over the Greywolves. While that was the case in the end, it didn't come without struggles. Quarterback Maverick McIvor was uncharacteristically out of sync with his receivers to start the game and Killeen Shoemaker jumped out to a 14-0 lead early on Central. The Bobcats allowed the most explosive plays they have all season, as Shoemaker gashed the Central defense for over 400 yards rushing. However, McIvor found his groove on the ground to the tune of 200 yards rushing. His rushing then opened up the passing game and McIvor was able to throw for 228 yards and five touchdowns to escape from Killeen with a win.

The Ugly: #8 Iraan dismantled by #3 Mason

It's infrequently that you see a top ten matchup as lopsided as this one. Last year, Iraan knocked off Mason on the way to a state final appearance. Mason players clearly wanted to avenge that loss and did just that in a 58-7 victory. The Mason defense was stellar as you could imagine, limiting Iraan to 139 yards of total offense and just five first downs. This is not uncommon for the Punchers, as they have only allowed 20 points all season long. The Punchers pretty much had the game wrapped up at the half with a 49-7 lead over Iraan. Mason's win snapped Iraan's 39 game regular season win streak while pushing the Puncher's home win streak to 31 games.
