Despite Good Defense from Lake View, "Losing is Not Good".

SWEETWATER, TX—The Lake View Chiefs dropped their third game of 2017 to Sweetwater 52-21, despite a solid defensive showing for the Chiefs.

“We saw good things [tonight],” Lake View Head Coach Hector Guevara said after the game. “We’ve got to catch the ball and do the little things right. You can’t play a bad game against a Sweetwater team like that.”

While the score and stats may not show it, the Chiefs’ defense was putting Sweetwater under more pressure than expected. The Chiefs had one sack and multiple quarterback hurries throughout the night. However, Sweetwater’s high tempo offense proved to be almost uncontainable for Lake View, with Sweetwater putting over 400 yards of total offense on the board.

“[The defense] has been the leading force for us,” added Guevara. “They’ve been kind of changing the momentum for us.”

However, quarterback Henry Nickias was sacked six times in Sweetwater on Friday night, quelling any threat he may have posed.

The Chiefs would be forced to punt on their opening drive after gaining one first down. The Chiefs would be hurt the very next play, by a holding call on their offensive line, pushing them back to their own eight yard line. The Chiefs would eventually punt on that drive.

Sweetwater got the scoring started at the 10:28 mark in the first quarter when Thompson found Kobe Clark from 20 yards out for the touchdown. The extra-point try was no good from the Mustangs to open the score to 6-0 early on.

The Chiefs’ defense would do well following the opening score of the game, forcing a punt out of Sweetwater. However, on the Mustangs next drive, Chris Thompson would find Kobe Clark once again from 27 yards out. A successful PAT would make it 13-0 Sweetwater with 4:48 left in the first quarter.

Sweetwater would score two more touchdowns before Lake View would answer back with an impressive 16 play, 72 yard scoring drive capped off by a three-yard pass from Henry Nickias to Kendall Blue to erase the goose egg in their part of the score column and close out the first half scoring.

After the break, Sweetwater marched 74 yards down the field in five plays on the legs of junior running back Alex Gallegos. On the fifth play of the drive, Gallegos punched in Sweetwater’s fifth touchdown of the game.

Including the Gallegos score, Sweetwater would score 19 points in the second half before the Chiefs would find the Promised Land again.

Following a Sweetwater pass interference and the score 52-6 in the fourth quarter, Nickias would strike in the form of a 44 yard touchdown pass to senior Devin Williams. Alexis Ayala struck for two points on the conversion with an end around to the left side to cut the deficit to 52-14 with 11:06 left in the game.

The Chiefs got a much needed lift on the next defensive series when senior linebacker Rafael Cruz intercepted Thompson and returned the ball to the Mustang’s 30 yard line. On the very next play, Izaiah Moreno caught a 32 yard touchdown pass from Nickias. The extra-point was converted, making the score 52-21 with 8:36 left in the game.

That pass would conclude the scoring for both teams and Sweetwater was able to kneel the rest of the time out to seal the victory.

"Losing is not good," added a somewhat cheerful Guevara. "But you can learn a lot from losing." 

Lake View moves to 0-3 this season, while Sweetwater moves to 3-0 in 2017.

The Chiefs will return home on Sept. 22 to take on Midland Greenwood (2-1) at 7:30 p.m.
