SAN ANGELO, TX —According to multiple sources who do not want to be named, the San Angelo Railway Museum, Inc. board of directors will hold an emergency meeting tonight at the Santa Fe Depot on S. Chadbourne St. Tuesday night to discuss the City of San Angelo’s decision to not renew the museum’s lease at the depot.
Much blame for the impasse at obtaining a new lease is being laid at the feet of the Museum’s current president and co-founder David Wood, who is expected to resign tonight. The board will name an interim president, the Mayor of Sterling City Lane Horwood.
Wood has volunteered countless hours to the Railway Museum over the past 20 years. However, he has been unable to instill confidence at City Hall that he is the man who will lead the Museum through a transition needed to obtain more financing for the museum’s operations. Lacking money, the Museum is at the mercy of the City, and the City is demanding the Museum create sustainable revenue stream to pay for upkeep of the old depot. Otherwise, depot maintenance will fall upon the taxpayers.
Early this afternoon, the City of San Angelo stated its confidence in the current Museum board has “degraded” since last week’s lease negotiations. City Attorney Theresa James stated her concerns in a press release.
