SAN ANGELO, TX -- San Angelo’s repaired 9/11 memorial will be rededicated at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8.
The monument is near Celebration Bridge along the Concho River and adjacent to the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, 1 Love St. The program will feature a history of the memorial by Catholic Bishop Michael Pfeifer, a performance by Fort Concho Elementary School students, and a keynote address from Rosendo “Rosey” Velez. A New York City first-responder on 9/11, Velez contributed a steel artifact from the World Trade Center as the centerpiece for the repair and restoration of the monument.
The memorial was dedicated on Sept. 8, 2003, in honor of those who died during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. It was unusual in that it was one of the few such memorials in Texas that included a piece of steel from “ground zero” in New York City.
The monument was vandalized and the piece of steal stolen in June 2016. Police continue to seek those who were responsible.
The public is invited to attend the event to remember the fallen and to honor the heroes from that fateful day.
