SAN ANGELO-- The City of San Angelo Public Information Officer Anthony Wilson released a statement regarding the use of the Foster Coliseum as a shelter for Harvey refugees on Tuesday after rumors had been swirling around the matter.
"Many in our community mistakenly believe Foster Communications Coliseum has been activated as an emergency shelter and the formal receipt of Hurricane Harvey evacuees is imminent. This is not the case," Wilson said.
Wilson added that the Texas Division of Emergency Management had inquired about the Coliseum's availability, to which the city replied "it is available, if needed." So far, no refugees have been officially relocated to San Angelo.
"We stand at the ready to respond to such a request," Wilson added in the statement. "But we will do so only if state emergency management officials ask us to. Only then would cots be set up, provisions delivered and the facility prepared to receive evacuees."
Wilson says San Angeloans can best help relief efforts by making financial donations to the Red Cross and the Salvation Army, which are heading many of the relief efforts. Blood donations are also in high demand for the relief efforts. "That would be another outstanding way for folks to contribute to the relief effort at this point," Wilson stated.
