Stop Sign Confusion Ends in Semi on Pickup Crash on U.S. 277

SAN ANGELO, TX — Shortly after 12:30 p.m. this afternoon, Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers were dispatched to a major motor vehicle accident at the intersection of U.S. 277 and Old Ballinger Hwy.

According Texas DPS at the scene, the driver of a white pickup was traveling west on Old Ballinger Hwy. when it came to a stop at the intersection of U.S. 277. The driver wanted to cross the major four-lane highway there, but did not realize the oncoming traffic from U.S. 277 did not have a stop light also. The driver continued to travel into the lanes of traffic of U.S. 277.

Meanwhile, an southbound truck tractor towing a semi-trailer was not able to slow down or avoid the trespassing truck and collided with it, sending debris flying into the air.

Luckily, the occupants of the pickup truck suffered no major injuries. The semi driver was uninjured.

At this intersection, flashing yellow lights warn motorists of the Old Ballinger Hwy. crossing. The Old Ballinger Hwy. traffic has a red flashing light, commanding a stop before proceeding across U.S. 277.

The driver of the pickup was issued a citation for failure to yield right-of-way.

Tom Green County Sheriff's Office officers, DPS Troopers, San Angelo Fire Department Medics, and the East Concho Volunteer Fire Department responded to the accident.

I see a handicap placard hanging from the mirror. Without the story quoting the age of the driver, I can take an educated guess and come to the conclusion that yet another OLD driver, most likely beyond the age of 70 causes yet another accident in San Angelo due to their inability to comprehend the rules of the road any longer.......
