San Angelo Religious Leaders to Hold Prayer Vigil for Racial Harmony

SAN ANGELO, TX -- The Tom Green County Democratic Party has called for a community-wide nonpartisan PRAYER VIGIL FOR RACIAL HARMONY in light of recent events in Charlottesville, VA.

The prayer vigil will be held on the steps of the Tom Green County Courthouse Thursday evening, August 17, at 7:30 p.m.

“I feel that every community in America should respond, proactively, to say this is who we are: we respect all of our citizens of every faith and every race,” said Democratic Chair David Currie.

“As a retired Baptist minister and chair of the local Democratic Party, I have a platform for calling the community to pray together. I want to invite everyone in our community to attend, especially our elected leadership. We have a wonderful community that needs to stay united and respectful of all persons.”

Leading in worship and prayer are the following faith leaders in San Angelo:

  • Tim Davenport-Herbst, Pastor, St. Paul Presbyterian Church, San Angelo

  • Ami Mizell-Flint, president of Temple Beth-Israel

  • Elder Bernie Coffee, moderator of the Synod of the Sun, Presbyterian Church (USA)

  • Father Tom Barley, Judicial Vicar for the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Angelo

  • Imam Iskandar Atajanow, Muslim Chaplain

  • Phillip Givens, Pastor; religious chair of local NAACP; and parliamentarian of local Ministerial Alliance

  • James Hassell, Pastor, First Baptist Church, San Angelo
