VERIBEST, TX — Veribest is coming off their first playoff berth in school history. That taste of the playoffs has elevated the expectations of the Falcons, even with the retirement of former head coach Jack Shely and promotion of new Head Coach Casey Mund from his assistant position. "This summer the kids were up in the weight room," Mund said. "They know what it takes to get [to playoffs] and they're getting more confident."
Last year Veribest went 4-5 overall, with a 2-1 district record. The Falcons return four starters on each side of the ball, giving them the experience they need to be successful. One of those starters that will be relied on heavily is senior running back Angel Marquez.
"Angel had a big year for us," Mund said. "He had a huge game against Water Valley. He's going to be a big contributor for us."
Last year, Marquez tallied 10 total touchdowns despite missing a few games to injury for the Falcons. If he stays healthy, he'll have another great year similar to 2016.
The Falcons will also move away from the ground game that Shely utilized during his tenure to a more balanced attack, and with junior quarterback Hayden Barnes taking the snaps this year, that should work out in their favor. Barnes is a guy with accuracy, height and mobility, the latter being a necessity in six-man football.
The Falcons also return four starters from their defense a year ago that allowed 45 points per game. Sophomore Josh Bolin and junior defensive lineman Zac Bolin will be the hinge on which the defensive door swings for Veribest. "Josh didn't play much last year. He's gotten much bigger and stronger" Mund said. "Zac is really good at reading plays. He started for us as a sophomore last year. I expect them to be huge contributors."
District 8-1A D1 is always a competitive district; 2017 will be no different with reigning champs Santa Anna returning just five starters and Water Valley returning just four.
"It's going to come down to the Water Valley game," Mund said. "Whether it's for a district title or a playoff spot, that game is going to be huge."
With the experience Veribest has under their belts, look for the Falcons to soar high this year. Veribest goes 7-3 overall with a 2-1 record in district play.
Veribest opens the season away at Rochelle on September 1st at 7:30 p.m.
