SAN ANGELO, TX – San Angelo city council members held their first of four strategic planning workshops Thursday afternoon where council and staff members spent the workshop developing the city’s priorities. The session was led by City Manager Daniel Valenzuela.
Valenzuela outlined the city’s current top five key messages; water, streets, a new police station, employee salaries and the development process.
Mayor Brenda Gunter then began the discussion with a list of the city’s top ten assets. Those assets, Gunter advises, are Goodfellow Air Force Base, medical/healthcare, cultural arts, recreation, agriculture, oil and gas, manufacturing, tourism and retirement.
Councilman Tommy Hebert added city employees to Gunter’s list of assets.
Gunter then presented a list of barriers to the city’s growth. Those barriers, she said, include technology, permits and planning, transportation, workforce, crime and high property taxes.
The purpose of the four scheduled workshops is to develop a detailed strategic plan ahead of the budgeting process.
Valenzuela concluded the meeting by saying that staff will take the information from the workshop and develop the strategic plan.
