SAN ANGELO, TEXAS -- The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office (TGCSO) and San Angelo FBI announced today that the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) has been contacted to assist in the 1988 double homicide investigation of Shane Stewart and Sally McNelly.
Stewart and McKelly attended a fireworks display at Lake Nasworthy in San Angelo on the 4th of July in 1988. The following morning, a lake ranger discovered Stewart's abandoned 1980 Chevrolet Camaro parked near O.C. Fisher Reservoir, several miles from Lake Nasworthy. Steward and McNelly were both determined to be missing.
In November of the same year, the bodies of Stewart and McNelly were discovered in close proximity to each other and near the Twin Buttes Reservoir. DPS officials stated that autopsies revealed both victims died of gunshot wounds.
According to the FBI, “The FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) provides assistance to law enforcement agencies across the country and around the world through investigative analysis. This work involves reviewing and assessing the facts of a criminal act, interpreting offender behavior, and interaction with victims. Their work attempts to shed light into the how and why of the crime and the extent and level of pre-planning involved. The BAU conducts detailed analysis of crimes which can be used to assist investigators. They can offer investigative suggestions, interview strategies, search warrant assistance, and expert testimony.”
Members of the BAU have recently traveled to San Angelo and met with the investigative team consisting of the TGCSO, Texas Rangers and San Angelo FBI, a TGCSO press release stated. The BAU was provided with critical case information wherein they were able to share both critical investigative analysis and possible evidentiary opportunities.
"Every effort to bring this case to a successful conclusion will be explored," the press release states,"further developments are expected and updates will be provided."
Anyone with any information regarding this investigation should contact the TGCSO or San Angelo FBI.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) also made the cold case double homicide a priority through their DPS public awareness program, last year.
