SAN ANGELO, TX — Details of a horrific two-vehicle crash near West Texas Steel on U.S. 277 south of San Angelo are emerging.
The crash involved a red pickup and a black four-door compact car. Our reporter at the scene said the Jaws-of-Life were used to extract the driver from the sedan.
For our observation of how the vehicles are situated, it appears like the black sedan rear-ended the red pickup in the northbound lane. The crash is in front of West Texas Steel. We witnessed at least two injured in the crash being loaded into ambulances, including the sedan driver who had to be extracted due to being trapped inside.
As of noon Friday, the northbound lanes on U.S. 277 are down to one lane while first responders work the scene.
Working the crash scene are Texas DPS, Tom Green County Sheriff’s Deputies, San Angelo Fire Department, and Constable Deen Dickson.
Update 12:43 p.m.
According to DPS Trooper Alan Dykstra, the crash was caused when the black Ford passenger car rammed the rear of the red Chevrolet pickup. The pickup was in the northbound lane stopped with a left turn signal, waiting to turn into West Texas Steel.
The pickup driver was rushed to Shannon Medical Center with minor injuries. The driver of the Ford was also rushed to Shannon, but with incapacitating injuries. Neither vehicle had passengers.
Dykstra said the driver of the Ford was cited for failure to control speed.
