One Dead After Truck Rolled Swerving to Miss a Deer North of Robert Lee

ROBERT LEE, TX — An unrestrained passenger riding in an F-150 pickup was killed when the truck swerved to miss a deer and ended up rolling over several times in a single vehicle crash north of Robert Lee early Memorial Day morning.

According to the Texas DPS, Danny Floyd Boatman, 47, of Lubbock was traveling north on the west Texas highway SH 208, 20 miles north of Robert Lee, when a deer entered the roadway. Boatman swerved to miss the deer in his 2002 Ford F-150. When the truck entered the southbound lane, he over-corrected to get back on his side of the road. In doing so, the truck entered a side skid across the northbound lane and into the east barrow ditch. Upon leaving the pavement, the truck rolled over multiple times.

DPS reported that not one of the five occupants of the truck was wearing their seatbelt. Boatman and the middle passenger, Crystal Ann Osborne-Berrera, 39, of Colorado City, were both ejected from the truck. Boatman suffered incapacitating injuries while Osborne-Berrera was killed. Coke County Justice of the Peace Jackie Walker pronounced her dead.

One passenger, Alex Austin Brown, 38, also of Colorado City was not injured, though DPS noted he was not wearing a seatbelt, either.

Two others suffered minor injuries. They were Kimberly James, 27; and Daniel Lee Berry, 37. Both were from Colorado City, DPS reported.

The crash happened at 5:23 a.m. The weather was clear and the roadway dry, DPS reported.

Trooper Michael McCary of the Bronte DPS section led the investigation. Troopers Matthew Walts and Dustin Henderson from the San Angelo DPS section assisted, along with the Coke County Sheriff’s Office. The Coke County Volunteer Fire Department tended to the crash site.
