SAN ANGELO, TX -- Governor Gregg Abbott has appointed Jarett Lujan as the student regent for the Texas Tech System Board of Regents for the 2017- 2018 academic school year.
Lujan, a Marfa, Texas native, is currently pursuing a Masters of Education in student development and leadership in higher education at Angelo State University (ASU), said a Texas Tech University System press release. Additionally, Lujan will also be the first Hispanic student to serve on the board.
“Jarett did an excellent job representing ASU students on campus and in the community when he was student body president,” ASU President Brian J. May, said. “I have no doubt he will provide that same type of outstanding service on the TTU System Board of Regents. The entire ASU Ram Family is proud of Jarett for earning this appointment. He certainly deserves it, and we wish him the best of luck.”
Lujan was the president of the Student Body/Student Government Association during the the 2015-2016 academic year at ASU. In the past year, Lujan has been serving ASU as an admissions councilor, and has been mentoring both college and high school students in the West Texas region. Lujan has also represented ASU at various collage fairs and other marketing presentations in the past.
“Jarett has proven himself as a dedicated and hard-working leader who strives to represent and serve his fellow students,” Chancellor Robert L. Duncan, said. “I’d like to congratulate Jarett on his appointment, and I’m confident he will provide quality insights and perspectives while serving in this important position.”
Texas Representative, Drew Darby, also shared his congratulations for Lujan on his Facebook page.
"Congratulations to ASU's Jarett Lujan on being named by @GovAbbott as the @TTUSystem Student Regent," Rep. Darby said in the post.
Lujan will serve a one-year term beginning June 1 on the Texas Tech Board of Regents and will attend his first Board of Regents meeting on Aug. 10-11 in Lubbock. Lujan will be replacing the 2016 appointee, Jeremy Stewart, of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso.
Lujan was also a track and field student-athlete for the Rams through his undergraduate tenure. He scored points during the Loan Star Conference Championship in 2014 and 2015 for his performance in the 800-meters as a short distance runner.
Lujan received his a Bachelors of Science in Biology with a minor in chemistry from ASU in 2016. Lujan is known for dedicating countless hours of community service around the San Angelo area, while also excelling in academia.
