SAN ANGELO, TX - Previously, LIVE! reported on the undertaking of San Angelo native Cody Broadway, who directed a documentary about the Texas School for the Deaf Rangers football team in Austin. Since our last update, Broadway received even more good news resulting from this inspiring undertaking. The ReelAbilities Film Festival, the largest festival in the country dedicated to presenting films made by and about people with different disabilities, whether physical, developmental or psychological, will be hosting the world premiere of Broadway's documentary, "4 Quarters of Silence," in New York City. The premiere will take place March 2 through March 8, 2017.
For Broadway and his team, the football team, the coach, Broadway's family and for San Angelo, this is a great honor. For Broadway, it's even more than that.
"Learning from these athletes has been an eye opening experience for me," said Broadway. "As a filmmaker, I sought to gain a greater understanding of their day-to-day lives, but what I was able to capture was a story that transcends age, ability and personal background. It has been my honor to root for this team both on and off the field."
4 Quarters of Silence chronicles the day-to-day lives of student athletes enrolled at the Texas School for the Deaf, located in Austin, and home to one of the largest deaf communities in the nation, Broadway said. This story highlights the raw emotion and unique challenges faced by players, parents, and coaches as they take part in one of Texas' most revered sports--high school football.
"From practice to the Friday Night Lights, the sheer grit and faith that embodies these players is showcased in striking form," said Broadway.
John Moore Jr., the head football coach for the school, said, "I'm honored and excited that the film has gotten great reviews, and I want to thank Cody and his team for the great work they've done. I hope to make it to New York City for the premiere."
The Texas School for the Deaf officials added, "Our football team is so proud to be featured in this film; it is a wonderful showcase of what deaf people can do."
Since leaving San Angelo, Broadway has earned many awards and accolades for his work in short films and television, including the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Jury Prize and Best International Web Series from Wendy's for I have a Voice web series. However, this documentary is the highlight of his career.
"I'm very proud of my son," said Cody's mom, Renee Broadway. "He is doing what he loves to do, and it shows in his work. God has blessed him with a talent, and I'm so thankful that he gets to follow his dreams."
Today, the San Angelo native lives in Denver, Colorado. He spent much of his career on television stations in San Angelo, San Antonio, and now Denver. He said he enjoys telling stories from behind his lens and learning about the latest in video technology. When he's not working on short films, or TV, he "enjoys capturing the beauty around him and spending time with his wife and two young sons."
