San Angelo Man Pleads Guilty, Gets 18 Years in Prison for Robbing Stripes and Meth

SAN ANGELO, TX – This morning at the Tom Green County courthouse, Magdaleno Suniga, Jr., 24, pleaded guilty to two charges: aggravated robbery and possession of a methamphetamine, 4G < 200G, with the intent to deliver, both first degree felonies.

As a result of his plea, 391st District Judge Tom Gossett accepted the State of Texas’ recommendation and sentenced Suniga to 18 years in a TDCJ institution. He also has to pay $180 in restitution.

“Magdaleno Suniga, Jr., based on your plea of guilty, and the evidence brought before me, I do indeed find you guilty beyond a reasonable doubt,” said Judge Gossett.

Judge Gossett, however, told Suniga he will receive credit for time served from January 29, 2016 to today.

“Thank you, sir,” Suniga responded.

Suniga, along with other co-defendants, including Guadalupe “Wally” Olvera, who will have his plea hearing this afternoon, robbed the Stripes at 1821 N. Bryant Blvd. on Jan. 27, 2016.

Throughout the hearing, Suniga, with chains around his ankles and wrists, sat straight and responded courteously to Gossett’s questions. He faced a sentence of 5 to 99 years, and a fine not to exceed $10,000.

According to court documents, on the day of the robbery, two Hispanic males with bandanas covering their faces with handguns entered the Stripes on Bryant and demanded the clerk give them money from the safe. As the clerk unlocked the safe, one man pointed the gun at her while the other took the money (more on the story here and here).

A juvenile arrested in the incident told San Angelo Police that all involved in the robbery are members of Darkside, a local street gang.
