SAN ANGELOT, TX - The Animal Shelter’s weekday hours will be extended to 6 p.m. each day to make it more accessible to the public.
The new operating hours of 10 a.m.- 6 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, will start on Oct. 1. The shelter is located at 3142 U.S. Highway 67 North.
Currently, the shelter closes at 5 p.m. four days per week, and is open until 6 p.m. on Wednesdays. James Flores, the City’s assistant director of Neighborhood and Family Services, said, “Closing at 5 p.m. puts an undue burden on people seeking to reclaim a lost pet or adopt a new one.”
The new schedule also offers the benefit of consistent hours, said City officials.
As part of the change, the shelter will no longer be open on Saturdays. Flores said an average of 1.2 adoptions has occurred on Saturdays at the shelter in the past year. By contrast, an average of 8.5 pets are adopted at mobile events, which are held most Saturdays at varying spots. Owners wishing to surrender a pet may also do so at the mobile events.
The shelter will remain closed on Sundays. The Animal Shelter Advisory Committee approved the new hours, and the change does not affect animal control officers or their procedures.
