According to a press release, the Fort Concho Living History Program will fire mortars on the hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. The demonstration will be on the fort’s Parade Ground, 630 S. Oakes St.
There is no charge to watch the demonstrations. Regular admission of $1.50 to $3 will give visitors access to the fort’s 10 buildings and displays.
Standard artillery fires projectiles at distances of a mile or more. A mortar fires its shell at a high elevation. That allows the Army to reach a target that standard cannons and howitzers cannot. The blank charges fired Saturday will reflect the use of a mortar in a battle situation.
