The City of San Angelo’s Public Information Division announced yesterday that there would be no interruption in garbage collection or landfill operations during the Memorial Day holiday weekend. However, most of the city offices will be closed Monday, May 30, in observance. City offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 31.
Love Municipal Pool opens for the Memorial Day weekend, with public swimming from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Admission is $5 per person for ages 3-64, free for children younger than 3, and $3 for 65 and older.
Among the City operations that will be closed for the holiday: Station 618 and Santa Fe Crossing senior centers, Southside and Carl Ray Johnson recreation centers, the McNease Convention Center, the San Angelo-Tom Green County Health Department, Fairmount Cemetery’s business offices, Municipal Court, the San Angelo Nature Center and the San Angelo Animal Shelter.
Day passes to Middle Concho and Spring Creek parks at Lake Nasworthy are available at the entrance gates to those parks for $3 per vehicle for City residents and $6 per vehicle for non-residents. Camping permits cost $6 per campsite per night for City residents and $12 for non-residents, and may also be purchased at the entrance gates and at Spring Creek Marina. Camping permits are always required. Day passes are required on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays through Labor Day.
At Fort Concho, Memorial Day exercises to honor the nation’s military members who have made the ultimate sacrifice will be at 9 a.m. Monday, May 30, in front of the Headquarters Building at the east end of the Parade Ground. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved into the nearby fort Commissary Building.
The guest speaker will be the Rev. John Pope, retired Air Force chief master sergeant. The Fort Concho Living History Program and the Sons of the Confederate Veterans will provide the color guard and salutes. Soloist Stephanie Campbell will sign the National Anthem and several patriotic songs.
The program is free and is organized by the Pocahontas Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, who will provide the refreshments. Fort Concho National Historic Landmark will remain open on Memorial Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for self-guided tours. For more information, call Fort Concho at 325-481-2646 or visit fortconcho.com.
