San Angelo Gives Campaign Extended After Technical Failure

The “San Angelo Gives” campaign is extended one day due to technical failures of the vendor providing the technology platform for the project.

Matt Lewis, with the San Angelo Area Foundation, announced that San Angelo Gives, the all-day multi-non-profit online fundraising drive, is extended from 24 to 48 hours.

The event is designed to raise money for approximately 148 local San Angelo and regional non-profits managed by the SAAF.

The event is driven by technology, specifically a web application, that was designed to show in real time the growth of donations throughout the day. Lewis explained that San Angelo Gives is a part of a larger, nationwide giving day, with all locations managed through the same platform.

At mid-morning, the web application slowed to a crawl and many people experienced difficulties making online donations. The leader board statistics served through the web app stopped working altogether.

“Service is slowly being restored,” Lewis assured in an email Tuesday evening.

The web app is managed by Kimbia and the campaign is called “Give Local America.” According Kimbia on their blog, “The root cause of the issue now appears to be a hardware issue on one of our hosted database nodes which caused a cascading effect, impacting our ability to deliver forms and process donations that was further exacerbated by new functionality related to leader boards, prizes and mobile applications.”

Kimbia’s 9:15 p.m. CT update reported the company started experiencing “latency issues” at about 9 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Kimbia is an Austin-based company that provides an online fundraising and crowdfunding platform. They claim over 19,000 organizations use their Software as a Service (SaaS).

"We appreciate the generosity of our community and nation that so many charitable gifts could cause such a problem," Lewis stated.
