ASU to Host Alzheimer's, Dementia Care Seminar

A press release today announced that Angelo State University’s Department of Physical Therapy will host a continuing education seminar for health care professionals and members of the public who care for people with Alzheimer’s and other cognitive diseases.

The seminar will be held Tuesday, April 26, in the ASU Mathematics-Computer Science (MCS) Building, Room 110, located at 2200 Dena Dr.

The seminar “Abilities Care Approach” will begin at 4:30 p.m. and continue until 6:45 p.m. The seminar is open to the public for free.

The featured speaker/instructor will be ASU alumni Jon Anderson, a licensed physical therapist and credentialed dementia care instructor for Ensign Service Inc. in San Antonio.

Anderson graduated from ASU’s physical therapy program in 2007 and was named the Midwest District Student of the Year by the Texas Therapy Association (TPTA). He has worked as a therapist for Ensign Services Inc. since 2008 and is licensed in Texas and California. He is certified as an instructor in dementia care and clinical education through the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and is a member of both the TPTA and APTA.

The seminar will cover various topics related to Alzheimer’s, dementia and other cognitive disorders, including:

  • Theoretical framework/foundation
  • Best ability to function and key remaining abilities for each dementia stage
  • Stages of dementia
  • Care approaches for each dementia stage
  • Question-and-answer wrap-up session

Although the seminar is geared toward health care professionals, the material is appropriate for anyone who interacts with or cares for persons with dementia. Physical therapy clinicians and faculty can earn two hours of Continuing Competence Units (CCU) credit.

There is no cost to attend the seminar, but advance registration is requested so there is an accurate count for informational handouts and snacks. To register, go online to www.angelo.edu/dementia-seminar.
