$10 Pet Adoptions at The San Angelo Animal Shelter Starting Next Week

The San Angelo Animal Shelter will adopt cats and dogs out for $10 from April 11-16.

Jennifer McConn is working with the San Angelo Animal Clinic to help with supporting the adoption of dogs and cats. She previously raised just over $10,000 in funding to help with the adoption of pets from the animal shelter.

“My goal is to absolutely empty the shelter of every adoptable/available dog and cat.” McConn said. 

This offer provides opportunities for families to get the pet they want at a low cost.

“Pet ownership is still expensive; a $10 adoption event doesn’t change that,” McConn said. “However, a $10 event does shine a light on many pets sitting in the shelter needing homes, and sometimes that’s all it takes for people to consider adopting.”

The Animal Shelter has held events in the past with McConn’s fundraising like the adoption event on March 5. Fifty seven pets were adopted that day.

“This is just a fund balance of the $10,000 that [McConn] raised, and $4,200-$4,300 was used in March,” said James Flores, Neighborhood Services Assistant Director.

Flores estimated there is $5,500 left in the McConn fund for adoption efforts at the shelter.

“We are going to continue this same effort April 11-16, and, instead of doing it Monday, we decided to do it for the entire week until the funds expire,” Flores said.

Depending on how fast adoptions happen, the event may end early in the week.

The $10 also includes the microchip, spay/neuter, and rabies vaccine for the adopted pets.

“Anybody who does the math to all that, even the $85 fee is low and realistic to the citizenry, so to get it for $10, how can you go wrong? I think people will utilize this opportunity because, if they didn’t have the $85, maybe they have got the $10,” Flores said.

It is McConn and Flores' hope that people will take this opportunity to adopt a pet this upcoming week and help the local animal shelter, located on 3142 US Highway 67.

“Without adoptions or rescues, these animals await a fate nobody wants," McConn said. "It is hardly their fault they have been failed by their owners or humans they've crossed paths with.”
