Angelo State University’s Multicultural Center hosted an event to bring acknowledgment to Black History Month this afternoon at the University Center.
The event, called Open Mic: Harlem Renaissance Café, allowed participants to read their own poetry or samples of poetry, while viewers enjoyed some Cajun-style food and viewed art displays at the event.
Tiffany Allen, a student at ASU, read the writings of Hannah L. Drake’s “Formation," which gave acknowledgment to recent events involving racial discrimination in America.
It acknowledges that all lives matter, Allen said.
“One of the biggest things about culture is the music and art. People can connect threw art and music,” Allen said.
Dr. Brian J. May, Angelo States University President, came to the event to acknowledge the importance of ASU having a diverse culture.
“It’s incredibly important because we have a very diverse student body," May said. "We want to make sure when [students] think about Angelo State, it’s like coming home.”
The Multicultural Center on campus provides a vision to reach out to all different cultures at ASU. From gender, sexual orientation, race, and religion, these are all backgrounds supported on campus.
"Student exposure to other cultures, experiences, and lifestyles, allows us to live and be successful together," May said. "It’s so important because when students leave campus, they will have this same connection with diversity at their work place. This will provide students the foundation to have a better life."
When asked about the current state of America in regards to passing legislation that helps with diversity, May said we all have to work at making a more diverse culture, and education is the real key to achieving this in society.
The Multicultural Center has plans to host a variety of different events throughout the school year. Some of these include Native American history, Asian Pacific Island, and Mexican American events, Allen said.
